A common problem with the "you can do it yourself you know" thing in #FOSS is that it doesn't make sense for software I just started using. I always try to be constructive and let people know about problems as well as entry barriers in their projects. At that point however I am far away from being able to sensibly contribute to a project. Not only do I not understand its code, I don't even completely understand how it works. Still, my issues might be valid - there's just no good place for them.
